Q asked:

I took out a private loan with TERI for my freshman year, and three more private loans with SallieMae for the last three years of undergrad. I called SallieMae to ask about my options and they were very unhelpful (not surprised). Is anyone in the same position or does anyone know of a company that could consolidate all of these loans so that I have only one monthly payment? Thank you !!

I’m wondering if anyone has had any success using those debt consolidation companies and if so, what’s the process of it? How does it work and will it really work at lowering your interest rate/debt owed? And what company(ies) did you use? Thanks!

I am considering looking into debt consolidation. My student loans are being garnished by ed fund from my wages. they have also just taken my Ca state income tax check. If I do debt consolidation, will they be able to stop my wages from being garnished?

It seems there is no such thing as free debt assistance. I would like to know if any agency can assist with consolidation or act as a mediator. Is this asking for too much for free?
My goal with this question is to find debt consolidation for someone like me who is poor, doesn’t own anything, has no collateral. Non-profit would be ok. Are there such places in Southern California?

I have way too many loans. Thankfully I finished college and got a good job. I heard that since the PLUS loan is in my parent’s name and the rest are in my name, I cannot consolidate. Can anyone help me out here? thank you.

I consolidated my student loans and now am finding out that by doing so I may have voided my ability to defer them in the future. Is there some way to undo this?

Due to a family tragedy, my husband and I are currently in $26,000 of credit card debt. All of the payments are current and the cards are paid on time with the accounts still open (we are not still charging, though). We are looking to seriously pay this down before the interest eats us alive. My husband wants to take out a bank loan and pay the cards off that way, but I am wondering about the debt consolidation programs you hear about (I know some of those are scams and some are real). Any advice or experience?
